How to Return Mail to Sender

With millions of pieces of mail mailed out every day mistakes can occur. If you receive mail that is not intended for you, it is important to handle the situation properly to ensure it gets promptly returned to sender. There are several steps you can take to return unwanted mail, including writing a message on the envelope or package and dropping it in a blue collection box.

The easiest way to return mail to sender is by writing "Return to Sender" on the piece and putting it back in your mailbox. This message clearly lets your delivery person know that the mail is not meant for you and that it should be returned to sender. However, this method only works if the envelope or package is unopened. If you open the envelope or package and write on it, you risk damaging the barcodes that are used to track the mail. This could result in your mail being rerouted back to you again or ending up in the wrong destination.

You can also drop the mail in a USPS blue collection box, which are often located at busy locations across town. When you do this, make sure the address is clearly marked and that you do not tamper with it in any way. The message on the bottom of the collection box is a good indication of what's going on with the mail.

The first line reads "Return to Sender, Not at this Address." This means that the mail is not being delivered because it is either incorrectly addressed or the address was not validated through CASS certification. This is the most common reason for mail being returned to sender.
